Best Napa Valley Winemaker

Bringing an Award-Winning Style to the Winery.

A native of South Carolina, Thomas Rivers Brown began his winemaking career in 1997 when he met winemaker Ehren Jordan and accepted a position at Turley Wine Cellars. Although new to winemaking, Brown was an eager student who learned quickly and achieved early success at Turley, Outpost, Chiarello, Nicholson Ranch and Schrader, among others.

His signature style: not having a signature style. As a non-interventionist, Brown opts for his wines to showcase the vineyard, not the winemaker. This unadorned and understated winemaking strategy has served him well over the years. In 2008, he became the youngest winemaker in history to receive a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker – and he received two of them that year. In 2010, he was named “Winemaker of the Year” by Food & Wine magazine.

Despite the critical acclaim and widespread publicity, it’s always about the wine for Brown. “Being a winemaker has allowed me to appreciate wines even more because, now when I’m tasting, I can taste backwards into a wine. What I detect in the finished product, I can now associate with the processes that made it so.” *
